Thursday Threesome: Three New Fall Shows I've Already Given Up On
You may recall how excited I was for some of the fall television slate. Unfortunately, it turns out that a lot of the television shows that debuted this fall? THEY'RE GARBAGE. I love Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which gets better every week, but the rest? I'm so disappointed, although it turns out I have more time to watch movies and read now. So let's wallow in our collective misery about the shows that could have been something, but ended up being nuthin'.
Why I Wanted to Watch: The cast (including Robin Williams, the guy who plays Bob Benson on Mad Men, Sarah Michelle Gellar, the guy who plays the dishonest journalist on The Newsroom) was stellar. The concept (comedy in a New York ad agency) interesting. The idea of Robin Williams in a sitcom he doesn't really need was also appealing.
Why I Gave Up: Robin Williams is a 12 when he needs to be around a 7 or 8. The writing is mediocre in its good moments. Everyone is trying so hard. Robin Williams is allowed to improv, and that's great, but then people who probably shouldn't be join in and...yeah. Just not working for me on any level.
Why I Wanted to Watch: Michael J. Fox deserves an opportunity to see if his new show clicks. Katie Finneran was on Wonderfalls, and that show has enough stored up good will at this point that, if anyone from that show is in something, I'll give it a shot. Yes, that includes Caroline Dhavernas in Grey's Anatomy in the Jungle or whatever that was. The previews actually kind of looked funny.
Why I Gave Up: I feel like Peter Griffin. I just feel like it tries so hard, and it just doesn't work. So little to laugh at, none of the characters feel especially real, and every episode felt longer than the one before. We even gave this almost seven episodes, and no improvement. So unfortunate.
Why I Wanted To Watch: It's a Marvel TV show! That's tied into the movies! That's got significant Whedon input! That's got Agent Coulson! Why wouldn't I?
Why I Gave Up: I still hate that I couldn't get into this. The issue with the show is just that it's...dull. There doesn't feel like there's any danger, or whimsy, or fun. It's paint-by-numbers mainstream stuff that simply doesn't work. I don't know if it needs more Marvel superheroes, or if it just needs some sort of injection of action or whatever, but, at the end of the day, I shouldn't be bored by a comic property, and this was really, really dull for me. I may have set expectations far too high, and if it turns out that the show ends up being picked up and I hear good things about the back end, I may try to catch up. But this was really disappointing for me.
