Thursday Threesome: My Three Favourite Ensemble Casts Off Screen

This one could get messy fast. I tend towards television ensemble casts rather than film casts, so the adorable antics of the Avengers cast didn’t make the cut. But trust me, they are amazing.

Sticking to the television world, there are still so many fantastic ensemble casts who work well on screen and are famous friends off screen. I think that the chemistry between a cast who are also friends in life, makes them all the most stunning on the screen. I thought long and hard and some notable mentions go to the Buffy cast, who were amazing, and still very close friends, the Stargate cast who melt my face with their adorable interconnectedness and also for a while there, the Heroes cast. It’s a shame that show went to hell in a hand basket, because for a while it was gripping new sci-fi/fantasy television with a cast that really clicked.

Drumroll then... find my picks below.

The Young Cast

I cannot go passed the Merlin cast on this front. Plucked from obscurity and going on to entertain kids and adults week after week, these actors and actresses really made a place for themselves in the hearts of their fans. What was fantastic for the fans of the show was that the actors videotaped their experiences for a set of truly unique behind the scenes specials that aired over time. If seeing Colin Morgan and Bradley James, having discovered that the fans had worked out their love of John Farnham’s ‘You’re The Voice’, take to developing a hysterical musical montage of them singing the song in various settings, doesn’t warm your heart to their fun and adorable chemistry then maybe these pictures will.

At any rate, these guys goof off other off screen, going on trips to Rollercoaster parks, attending sporting events together, crying over each others awards and rescuing each other from spiders. I have a feeling they will be another of those long time friends casts.

The New Cast

Game of Thrones. I mean really. Being such a fan of the books, it makes me very happy that for the most part they continue to cast the show next to perfectly. The actors are also a hoot, desperate to catch up with each other, find out what the other characters are doing and have fun with the juggernaut that they just hitched themselves to.

It's a really fantastic part of the show that these actors, who in some cases rarely get to see each other because they film so far apart, can catch up at press events and absolutely adore each other. Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey are hysterical to watch together and Jason Momoa's stories of tricking Emilia Clarke are so much fun.

The Old Faithful Cast

Who can go past the cast of a show that had only 13 episodes and a movie but still keeps flying? This cast makes grown men cry, makes people dress up, collects money for various charities through their fans and their commitment to the show. The show just marked it’s 10th anniversary with a huge comic con panel and special on the SyFy channel. Joss cried. They talked about potentially rebooting or picking the series up. The thing is, you could never do it with another cast, and no other cast could have carried this mythology so well for so long. Firefly wins.

This cast still gets together for dinner, are cast in more of Joss' shows so that they can all keep in touch and love each other right down to the core. The outpouring of love, support and respect from each of them when Sean Maher recently openly came out as gay was fantastic. Jewel's stories of her and Nathan pranking one and another and flipping the bird are hilarious. All have gone on to be very successful professionals, but all come back to their love for this show, it's fans and Joss.
