Review: Sideshow Boba Fett 1/6th Scale Figure!

I was hugely impressed by the quality of Sideshow’s Militaries of Star Wars Commander Cody, so I’ve been greatly anticipating their 1/6th scale badass bounty hunter Boba Fett!

Sure, he was an annoying floppy-haired kid, and as an adult pretty much failed at everything he attempted on-screen, stood around doing nothing in the background a lot, had a bizarre voice change, and was accidentally murdered by a near-blind, barely-standing Han Solo, but he’s a legend, right! And more importantly than all that... he LOOKS AWESOME. He’s been capturing our stunted imaginations since we were crotch-high to an ewok.

Well today my (mostly ironic) prayers were answered and 1/6th scale Boba Fett jetted his way into my wildly-shaking-and-sweating-with-enthusiasm hands! Is this a figure that is worthy of the hype?

Join me after the jump and we’ll find out! Together! (Hugs).

Much like Cody before him, clone DNA donor Boba is packed in one mighty big, black heavy box...

Also note that this is The Empire Strikes Back version, not the Return of the Jedi which has some subtle colour/costume differences. This is further confirmed by the sweet movie stills on the back of the box...

I photograph these straight out of the shipping boxes and yet they are always dusty! Sideshow must have a warehouse that looks like that one from Raiders of the Lost Ark!

The package design is quite ingenious and very collector friendly, allowing you to open it up and take everything out without damaging it. Held together by hidden magnets (magic) it folds open like a book to reveal a tray of accessories, the figure itself, and a lot of flavour text telling you all about Boba's famous exploits and feats like that time he high-fived Yak Face, and skateboarded around the rim of the Sarlacc pit...

He comes with a hell of a lot of hands, and not just gripping ones either. He also has a two finger salute and an always useful thumbs up! Plus he has an additional pair of arched feet so he can raise his heel and put the weight on his toes...

And here's a closer look at his weaponry, including an extremely iconic rifle...

But my favourite accessory by a long shot is the base! Best. Base. Ever. Bar none...

Containing two AA batteries, it actually lights up. Although it's a little hard to see in the image we have the two blue lights at the back and the red on the bottom is all light. It's fantastic and clearly reminiscent of the freezing chamber scene (which is my personal favourite). Well done, Sideshow! I love this!

So let's take a look at the main man himself...

As you can see he's wearing a fabric flight suit and all of the hard sculpted armour fits over the top of it. There's plenty of detail here with a multitude of straps, belts, plates, tubes, and decoration. Check out the markings on his shoulder and the cobbled together weaponry on his wrist guard...

And the cloak is actually lined with thin wire so it's very easy to shape and have flowing in whatever direction you want it to.

He has a clump of scalped wookiee braids on his left shoulder, and let's take a closer look at his transport while we're in the area...

The jetpack even has an array of smaller switches and buttons underneath that you'll never be able to see. I do have one minor gripe about the jetpack though. It only attaches at the top of his back, hooking onto two metal buckles that emerge from his flightsuit. It's a little fiddly to get on and there's nothing to attach it at the bottom (as far as I'm aware anyway) so it swings if you move him. There's no danger of it falling off while he's on a shelf but every time I changed his hands or position for the photographs it would clatter to the ground. I kind of wish they'd used a magnet like they did with Commander Cody's brilliantly designed backpack. Even if they kept the hooks but used the magnet for extra support.

Speaking of magnets, see his holster strap?

Usually a strap like that will connect with a miniature press-stud and cause many tears of frustration. This one clicks easily into place with the help of a tiny magnet which is a very welcome touch. I want magnets on everything. Except Magneto. He's a terrorist.

The paint on the helmet is features incredible weathering which completely suits the "worn universe" feel of the original trilogy. Plenty of dents from walking into walls...

Clone Commander Cody was packaged with two different helmets and an unhelmeted Temuera Morrison face. Boba Fett has no available variations. What you see is what you get here and his iconic helmet is permanently attached. While it's not as big a value add as Cody, I'm actually quite pleased they went that way with Boba. It keeps that original movie mystery that we enjoyed as a kid. I like not knowing what's under there and I that what we imagined as children was very different to what we were served in the prequels. I dig how old school this guy is.

Love the rifle and he can easily hold it in the very iconic manner that he does in the films. In fact I'm quite impressed with the articulation overall. I could get him into a lot of great poses with very little effort and he feels very sturdy for the most part. The only thing that makes me nervous is switching out the hands because I always feel like I'm forcing in the peg. Sounds like a euphemism doesn't it? "Now on video-on-demand Forcing in the Peg IV: College Years."

All the poses are just so great...

The targeting computer (I think that's what that thing sticking out the top of his helmet is) folds down so he can effectively use his flame-throwers or grappling line or whatever the hell those things are that he fails to effectively use in the movies.

And now that portion of the 1/6th scale figure review that I like to refer to as Mystery Accessories. What the hell are these things?

If there was an instruction sheet then I missed it. I have no idea what those things are. I'm going to assume that they are alternate weapons for his wrist guards but I have no idea how to attach them, or where they go, and I don't want to break anything finding out. BACK IN THE BOX WITH YOU!

And here's his pistol. Does he use this in the film? Not as fancy as his pappy's chromed out pimp versions...

Oh and we'd better make use of that "thumbs up" hand...

And finally my favourite pose of all, and how he'll appear on my own shelf...

I'm really impressed with Boba. He doesn't have all the bells and whistles and extras that Cody had, but he's so badass that he doesn't need them. He's everything I want/need from a 1/6th scale Boba Fett figure and looks incredible in person. I'm keeping an eye out for a good price on the IG-88 to accompany him and I have my eye on the upcoming space-lizard Bossk. Bounty hunters? You guys are the best!

Boba is miraculously still in stock! You can have him in your own hands within the week by ordering him here: Sideshow Boba Fett 1/6th Scale Figure

  1. The 4 alternative weapons and tools go into little slits in the shin. Lift up the knee pad and you'll see.
